BOXING AT WAIPUKURAU
Club’s Good Record for Past Year ANNUAL MEETING From Our Own Correspondent. WAIPUKURAU, June 1. The annual general meeting of the Waipukurau Boxing Club was held tonight. Mr J. D. Ormond presided over a good attendance of boxing enthusiasts. The annual report, as presented by the secretary, Mr J. White, was as follows:— The first gymnasium practice was held on April 8, 1935. Since then the club has put on three tournaments in the local theatre, each proving to be a financial success, and trophies for th-i most scientific boxer and gamest loser were awarded. B. Nicol was successful in winning the trophy for the most scientific boxer on each occasion, a creditable performance for the first year. The club was well represented at the Hawke’s Bay championships, when A. Chapman won the middleweight and J. I’urgusson was runner-up in the welterweight championship. Apart from the championships the club was also represented at four tournaments at Hastings and one at Danncvirke. Fourtyone wins, 30 losses and four draws were the results of the year’s work, and these reflected credit on the principal trainers, Messrs G. Gibson and A Smales The club has been fortunate in the past year with donations of gloves, gear and trophies. During the year the club has had donated to it some 32 cups and medals for competition. The club has been fortunate in that members have provided transport of tho boys to the various out-district tournaments. In conclusion, we would like to thana Mr M. Archer, treasurer, for his invaluable assistance, and also the chairman and committee. Special thanks are due to the Press. The balance sheet for the year showed a credit balance of £27 3/9. Mr A. W. Parsons paid a tr'bute to the secretary, Mr White, and the founders of boxing in the Waipukurau area, Messrs A. Smales and G Gibson. Special mention was made of Mr L. Isaacs. The following new members were elected: Messrs I’. Wilder, J. McKay, A. S. Annand, A. Chote, A. E. Gibsun, D. McKee, and P. Lee. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr A. W. Parsons; president, Dr. C. Raymond; vice-presidents, Messrs J. D. Ormond, junr., C. L. Crooks, and J. W. Elliott; secretary, Mr L. Isaacs; treasurer, Mr M. Archer; committee, Messrs L. Becchem, B. Brooker, P. Bridgeman, J. McCarthy, J. Skidmore G. Grainger, L. Nicol, R. Davey, P. Waters, and J. J. White; trainers, Messrs A. Smales and G. Gibson; lion. auditor, Mr F. A. G. Dunne. It was decided that a letter of thanks be written to Mr S. E. Esam, auditor for the past year.
Mr C. L. Crooks donated a cup for the boxer taking the most interest and showing the most progress in the sport during the coming year. At the conclusion of the meeting the patron. Mr A. W. Parsons, entertained the members at supper.
