The Year’s Activities

NEARLY 100 DWELLINGS

The remarkable increase in the amount of domestic uuilding in Hastings during the year to the end of March, in which period the number of permits for dwellings increased to 94 ijr comparison with 51 in the previous year, it, referred to in the annual report of tbo Borough Building Inspector, Mr O. O. Carrell.

The expenditure during the past year was £68,320 as against £30,855 in the previous year, and the average cost of each dwelling rose from £605 to £727 in the two years. That rise means that a considerably better type of dwelling was built in the latter year, for there was no individual dwelling of a very expensive type to raise the general average.

The total cost of all buildings for which permits were issued up to March 31 was £140,388 as against £114,419. making an increase of £25,969, and the number of permits issued increased from 175 to 219.

Apart from 17 smaller business premises costing a combined total of £33.409, and 18 alterations and additions costing £7145, the principal works for which permits were issued during the year were the Bank of New South Wales (£12,929), the new Masonic Lodge (£2650), St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Sunday School (£3999), and the new Convent School (£4135).

“The building activities during the coming year,” reports Mr Carrell, “promise to equal the preceding year, as several inquiries have already been made concerning the erection of largo business premises and dwellings.”
