TWO-POINT VICTORY

Engebretsen Defeats Beer in Bowls Replay EASTER RINKS TOURNEY The replay to find the winner of the Hawke’s Bay Bowling Centre’s Easter rinks tournament was successfully concluded yesterday afternoon with a two point victory to Erfgebretsen over Beer. The Wairere green was in extremely good order, but a stiff breeze became troublesome, with the result that the heads were not up to those exhibited in the game played last Saturday. The game was remarkable for low scoring, 11 successive singles being registered, and the final score, Engebretsen 15, Beer 13, falls a good deal short of the 22 all in the previous game.

When play commenced Engebretsen succeeded in chalking up two and then a single. Beer then gathered in one on tho third head and added further singles on the fourth, fifth and sixth heads, making him four. Engebretsen then succeeded with five singles, which brought his total to eight. With a single and a two Beer reached seven, but Engebretsen widened the scoring gap on the next head with three, making him 11. Beer again chalked up one and two, which brought his total to 10. Two and then one to Engebretsen gave him a lead of four, which was reduced to one by Beer chalking up two and, one. The totals at the 20th head were; Engebretsen 14, Beer 13. The last head saw Elmes’s first close to Jack, while Nuttall was a trifle short. Elmes’s second bumped Nuttall in for shot. Bryan then trailed the jack, but lost it to Elmes’s bowl. Webley made it two and then bumped in another for three. Engebretsen, anticipating a drive, played well back of the head. Beer’s first drive failed to connect, and in his second attempt to turn struck the jack, which rebounded forward and left Engebretsen one up and the victory by two points. The teams were;—Elmes, McNiven, Webley, Engebretsen (s) 15; Nuttall, Sweetapple, Bryan, Beer (s) 13. At the close of play the president of the centre, Mr A. W. Simpson, congratulated the winners on winning the tournament and the runners-up on their very fine performance. He was fortunate to witness the games last Saturday and again that afternoon, and complimented both teams on the very at- . tractive display of bowling given on each occasion. He also expressed appreciation of the various clubs in providing grounds and the greenkeepers for tho fine rinks provided, and paid a tribute to the ladies for providing refreshments during the tournament. Both skips briefly thanked Mr Simpson for his appreciative remarks, and cheers for both rinks being given called the finis of the 1936 Easter tournament.
