OBITUARY
Mr. F. J. Stowe
The death took place yesterday of Mr Frederick James Stowe, aged 69 years, a well-known sportsman of Hastings and Hawke's Bay. Born at Havelock North, the late Mr Stowe was first attached to the late Mr Alden (Tuki) McLean’s racing establishment as jockey, after which ho was a freelance horseman in this district, and among the many owners he rode for was the late Hon. J. D. Ormond. Retiring from the saddle he set up as a public trainer, but later acted as private trainer to Mr E. J. White, for whom at one Wairoa meeting he saddled up no less than 11 of the 16 winners at the meeting. From training he accepted a position as custodian of the Opaki racecourse for the Masterton Racing Club, but was obliged to relinquish the position on account of ill-health. He returned to Hastings about five years ago and. since then had been confined to his bed practically throughout that period. He was held in the highest esteem in his profession and was a keen enthusiast of all athletic sport, his genial personality making him a very popular figure. He was at one time a member of the executive of the Hastings Rugby Union, when that body purchased the Ridge, which was later sold when Hastings affiliated with the H.B.R.U. He was a junior selector in Hastings Rugby for many years. There are left a widow and a grownup family to whom widespread sympathy will bo extended. The funeral will leave the residence, 209 Beresford street, Hastings, at 2.30 p.m. to-morrow afternoon for the Hastings cemetery.
