Democrat Candidate MR. N. R. JACOBSEN’S CAREER Now engaged in the initial stages of his campaign for parliamentary honours, Mr N. R. Jacobsen has again taken up his residence in Napier, for which electorate he has been selected as Democrat candidate. In giving the “Tribune” an outline of his career he said that he was born in Wellington and had lived in New Zealand ail his life except for three years, during which he was working his way round the world. Mr Jacobsen received his secondary education at the Auckland Grammar School, winning every available scholarship. He graduated at the Auckland University B.Sc. in 1911, and M.Sc. in 1912. He was awarded the Sir George Grey Scholarship in advanced mathematics, physics and chemistry. He continued his research work in science after obtaining the M.Sc. degree and was offered a postgraduate research scholarship. He next studied law at the Auckland University and later joined a legal firm to gain practical experience. At this stajjj de declined several large executive positions in order to enter upon educational and social research. He was subsequently second assistant at the Hamilton High School and vice-prin-cipal at the Napier Boys' High Scnool. He wrote a course for his B.A. degree in Latin and French. He was Jater senior lecturer at the Teachers’ Training College, Wellington. For two years he studied advanced agriculture under Professor Peren, at the Victoria University, Wellington. He next tooK 3 full honours course in education. Acting on the advice of Mr Milner, headmaster of Waitaki Boys’ High School, who had just returned from a World Conference of Progressive Teachers, Mr Jacobsen travelled abioad for three years to bring his educational research before the leading authorities of the world including Di. John Dewey of U.S.A, and Rabindrinath Tagore of the East. He accepted a position as professor at Visva Bharabi University, the most famous educational institution in the East. Mr Jacobsen has taken a keen interest in a variety of sports and has been a member of the following executive committees and provincial executives : Auckland Amateur Athletic Association, Auckland Hockey Association, Auckland Tennis Association, South Auckland Hockey, Cricket and Athletic Associations, Hawke’s Bay Rifle Association, Hawke’s Bay LifeSaving, Rugby and Cricket Associations. He was hon. secretary to St. Andrew’s Golf Club, Hamilton, and at cricket played against the Australians and Englishmen and competed on the running track against the American champions. He was also vice-captain of the first New Zealand hockey team. On one occasion he captained the Australian hockey eleven and recently was captain of an Indian hockey team. He represented his university in tennis, golf and debating. While at the Auckland University, he was nominated by his fellow-students for the Rhodes Scholarship.
