MEAT CONTRETEMPS

Misunderstanding Apparent

DR. PAGE’S STATEMENT Tone Resented in London '.By Telegraph—Press Assu.—Copyright.) (Received 22, 11-20 a.m.) LONDON, June 21. The “Sun-Herald” news service has been informed that a remarkable Anglo-Australian meat contrctempts has occurred as a result of Dr. Earle Page’s statement at Melbourne. Tho Dominions Office and the Board of Trade declined to comment, but the tone of Dr. Page’s statement is resented. It is gathered that governmental telegrams are passing in an endeavour to clear up the situation. Evidently Mr. Elliot gave certain explanations to Mr. Gullett which wore obscure or misunderstood hero or misinterpreted in Australia. Dr. Earlo Page, acting-Primo Minister, announced on Thursday that a cable had been received from tho Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, announcing that an agreement had been reached whereby tho whole of Australia’s production of export niuttou, lamb and beef in the July-September period could be shipped to the United Kingdom. This agreement was reached pending negotiation of a long-term agreement. Official estimates of Australian meat exports for the third quarter are as follows:—Mutton and lamb, 450,000 cwt.; chilled beef, .140,000 cwt.; frozen beef and veal, 710,000 cwt. Dr. Page said that the agreement was most satisfactory and was also a triumph for Mr. Lyons.
