ONGAONGA CELEBRATES BIRTH
The Ongaonga Women’s Institute held their eighth birthday party and bulb display on Friday, visitors from surrounding districts being present. Mrs Haldane, president, welcomed tne visitors, and all joined in the afternoon’s programme. Mrs and Alisa Carter both delighted the audience with songs. A play reading, entitled “Between the Soup and the Savoury,” was well acted and read by Mrs Bradley, Airs Spackman and Miss Jean Hansen. A community sing, led by Alias Jean Hansen, also was very much enjoyed. A balloon competition was won by AJiss Carter, with Airs Bowls, of lakapau, second Then came a “sniffing” competition of pantry necessities, this being won by two visitors, Airs Saunders aud Alias White. A dainty afternoon tea was then served, the beautiful birthday cake, with its eight candles, which was given and made by Alia AlcNlcol, took its place in the centre of the table, it being cut by Mrs Haldane and handed around to all present.
Alter this, Airs Haldane called for Airs Bell and her infant sou to come forward and accept a post office money box from the members of the institute. Airs Bell responded. Mrs J. Coles kindly judged the spring bulb display, the results being as follow. — Jonquils:—Mrs Carter 1. Only entry. Trumpets: —Mrs Carter 1, Airs Bradley 2, Mrs Haldane 3. Bowls of bulbs: Airs Beacheni 1, Mrs Carter 2, Mrs Bell 3.
Bowl of spring flowers: —Mrs Carter t Mrs Bradley 2, Mrs Carter 3.
The members of the institute also wished Airs Beuck, who is a valued member mid at present in hospital, a speedy recovery. A very enjoyable afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem.
HAVELOCK N. MEETING. GARDEN CIRCLE AFTERNOON. At the invitation of Mrs. ChapmanTaylor, the garden circle of the Havelock North Women’s Institute held its meeting in her quaint little home. The living-room looked gay with spring flowers and a log fire burning in the unique fireplace made the room very cosy, Mrs. A. Frost presided over the meeting and read the annual report to a full attendance. Mrs. W. Bridgman, president of the institute, congratulated the circle on its successful year’s work and said that it was the most active circle of the institute. Beautiful posies, the work of a member, Miss McCorkindale, were presented to Mrs. Frost, convenor, and Mrs. Egan, secretary. Both ladies thanked' the members for their kindness. After partaking of afternoon tea, and having unfriendly chat, Mrs. Chap-inan-Taylor read “Miss Viney’s Garden,” an extract from “Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch,” which was much enjoyed by all present. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Chapman-Taylor for the very pleasant afternoon spent with her and after a stroll round the garden the members dispersed.
