SHIPMENT OF FRUIT

Napier Loading Methods BEST IN THE DOMINION Th» methods employed in the loading of apples for export at the port of Napier are second to none in the Dominion, is the opinion of an expert who visited Napier yesterday. While the Port Curtis has been loading apples for export in the Roadstead this week a representative of one of the big companies, Mr H. Toomer, who attends to the preparation of the holds for the receiving ot fruit, was present. He has observed the loading of apples at every port in the Dominion whore apples are loaded, and ho considered that they were more carefully handled and loaded at Napier than at any other port. He specially commended the type of tray and sling that are used for the purpose. He considered that in this work Napier was in the forefront. The cases are carefully loaded into the lighters by means of a long slide reaching from the fruit truck doors. For discharge into the overseas vessels specially designed trays are utilised. Each of these will hold 30 cases, particular care having been made to avoid any pinching during the course of the lift. Approximately 30,000 cases have been shipped this season and those concerned have expressed themselves as being most satisfied with the loading methods employed.
