WAIPAWA COUNCIL MEETING | VARIOUS MATTERS DISCUSSED From Our Own Correspondent. The monthly meeting of the Waipawa County Council was held yesterday, when there were present Crs. N. M. Paulsen (chairman), L. Glenny, B. Gray, C. Bainbridge. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. Butler. Mr Alfred Walker was granted a lease at 10/- per annum of a closed road near his property at Makaretu. The Tatiranga City Council sought support for a resolution asking the Government to make a rebate of 20 per cent, on 1933-34 rates.—The chairman said he did not think the proposal had a hope of being adopted.—No action taken. The State Fire Office, acting as agents for the Unemployment Board, wrote explaining in reference to an accident, that provision was made for the payment of £1 to a relief worker sustaining injury.—Cr. Glenny said the trouble was that the £1 in this case had been paid to the wrong doctor. The Valuation Department advised that an addition had been made to the Valuation of Land Act which extends the right of objection to a reduced valuation to any local rating authority affected. The Audit Office drew attention to the fact that the rebate of 12f per cent, on 1931-32 rates was mandatory.—The chairman said he read the clause as permitting rating authorities to use their discretion in respect of rates not paid.—No action was taken pending receipt of a reply to a letter submitting the council’s views. Otawhao settlers are to be informed that only those who received water from the new supply would be responsible for the special rate. The chairman, Crs. Butler and Bainbridge and the engineer were appointed a committee to inspect the Argyll water tace and report on a complaint by Mr <1 Stephenson The health inspector reported on several complaints regarding sanitation at Takapau.—Those concerned are to bo notified that the required improvements must be effected. J. H. Francis and Co. forwarded a letter from the A.M.P. Society agreeing to take up the council’s £19,000 loan for 20 years at 4} per cent, re payable by 40 instalments. The terms were accepted and a special rate is to be struck. The telephone linesman reported that two new subscribers had been linked up. Mr V. A. Patterson was reappointed ranger for a period of 12 months. The following tenders were accepted; —Pettit’s Valley bridge :Fairhurst Bros., £439 (one tender). Tangarevva (Clinton) culvert: Hastings Erection Co., £2OO (two tenders). Mill road (Ongaonga) culvert: Fairhurst Bros £390 15/- (two tenders). ENGINEER’S REPORT. Waipawa Riding.—Considerable scour j took place tn many roads in this riding, necessitating considerable repairs, which are being attended to. A new 27ft, x 2ft. culvert has been put in by Holden’s gate to replace- a decayed wooden one. Slips are being removed Irotn Tikokino hill. Four and a-h'alf chains of fencing is required at the, bridge on the Brow road. Six hundred cubic yards of metal are required on the Te Onepu road. Repairs have been done to motor bridge near Cr. Butler’s proper. • Onga Onga Riding.—Fairhurst Bros, have commenced the protection work at Fletcher’s Crossing bridge. Slips on Look-out road have been removed. Repairs have been done to concrete slab on the same road. Considerable damage was done in this riding by the recent flood. Two spans of the concrete bridge on Pettit Valley road | collapsed owing to one pier being underI mined. A temporary bridge and road i have been made through the property of Mr. A. Freemantle, who very kindly i gave his permission for this to be done. A bad wash-out took place near the ' Onga Onga bridge. The river now has ; caused a very bad scour above the | bridge mid a groyne is very necessary to prevent the river scouring into the ■ road. Some willows and rubbish re- : quire removing from the bed of the I stream below the bridge. A new 12in. I twin culvert has been put in at the ' I junction of Lindsay and Main Onga j I Onga reads. I Clinton Riding.—The recent flood I I caused considerable damage thronghi out this riding. with the water at flood time. The horse team is in this riding cleaning up water-tables and grading in loose metal. Further protection is required at the land pier on Balfour’s side of the Tukipo bridge. Slips have been re. moved on Black’s road by Durham’s. Raking in loose metal and general maintenance have been carried out. Notices have been placed on two suspension bridges limiting load to four tons Takapau Riding.—The Tukipo river overflowed its banks along Ashcott road and caused considerable scour. This has -been repaired. Five hundred and fifteen yards of metal has been crushed and delivered in the Otawhao block and Rangitofo road. Soft foundations are-being, dug out along the main road between Power’s and Takapau turn-off One hundred and fifty yards crushed metal is being used on this work. Grading in metal and general maintenance has been carried out. General.—Tenders are invited for the repairs to Pettit Valley road bridge, reinforced culvert by Lowe’s wool-shed ind Black’s road, and reinforced concrete bridge, Mill road, Onga Onga. An average of fifteen unemployed men have been working during the month, two from the county and thirteen from the Waipawa Borough.
