WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MARAEKAKAHO BRANCH There was a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Maraekakaho Women’s Institute. Tho annual report was read by Mrs Simmons, who was re-elected president, with Mrs R. Elliott secretray. The balance sheet was read by Mrs McClagin, who was re-elected treasurer. Numerous votes of thanks were passed, including oue to the hall committee for the use of the half, and bouquets were presented to both the president and tho retiring secretary, Miss Simmons. There was a short discussion on holding a Women’s Institute shop in Hastings, the majority of the members being in favour of It. The competition for a maderia cake resulted in Mrs Clarkson the winner and Mrs MeConochie second. Altogether a very pleasant afternoon was spent, the committee being hostesses, which closed with the singing of the National Anthem. Last month the Women’s Institute, combined with the school, spent an enjoyable day, with the kind permission of Mr Wright, on the property adjoining the cottage. The weather was all that could be desired, and both children and adults entered into the spirit of the picnic, playing games, swimming, running races and hunting for peanuts, etc. The happy day came to an end all too soon. MANGAORAPA GROUP. The annual meeting of the Mangaorapa Women's Institute was held in the school on Friday. Mrs Hope presided over a' fair attendance. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, also a letter from the town clerk of Wairoa, thanking the members for their kind donation towards the earthquake relief fund. The new committee was elected, which comprises Mrs Hope as president and Mrs Hogg as secretary. The balance sheet for the previous year was discussed and proved it had been a very successful year, in spite of hard times. It was decided that a dance be held on April 7 to help the funds. It was also potato day, each one bringing along her crop to be weighed. This caused quite a lot of excitement and resulted in Mrs Jim Davidson gaining first place (281bs) and Miss Margaret Davidson second (13Hbs). Tho total weight of 74Jlbs was sold to Mrs Thelwall. A competition was given by Mrs Moroney, and was won by Mrs Connell. Miss June Davidson said she would like to be relieved of the librarian’s position, and this was taken over by Miss Margaret Davidson. CLIVE GROUP. The sixth annual meeting of the Clive Women’s Institute was held in the Hall on Tuesday, when there was a good attendance of members, Mrs. Gregory presiding. After opening with the institute song business was proceeded with. The annual report and balance sheet, which was read and adopted, disclosed a most satisfactory state of affairs, a busy and successful year having concluded. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Airs. R. Gregory; vice-presidents, Mrs. G. Merritt and Mrs. George C. Thornton; secretary and treasurer, Mrs. J. V. Cushing; committee, Mesdames Dyett, R. Hausey, Janies Hellyer, Fred Hollyer and Miss Merritt. Votes of thanks were passed to the retiring officers. The monthly competition was keenly eont’ested, the final results showing very close competition, Airs. Smythe gaining first prize, Aliss AlcKec second and Aliss Gregory third, all three being presented with dainty gifts. Tho ten minutes social item was in the hands of Aliss Nola Cushing and the Aliases Gollup (2) who organised a mock court, which proved very humorous and entertaining, tho amount collected in fines going towards sending a delegate to tho conference.
