TEACHERS’ INSTITUTE. From Our Own Correspondent. There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Waipawa branch of the Teachers’ Institute, Mr J. A. Lockhart presiding.’ The report stated that the membership was 43, and the financial position was satisfactory, there being a credit balance of £l2 9/6. Thanks were expressed to Mr E. Barry ((Palmerston North), Mr C. Harker, and Mr Cutforth for addresses. The report stressed fhe need for unity in the ranks of the profession. The subscription was fixed at 23/-, the same as last year, and non-mem-bers are to be urged to join up. It was decided to support the nomination of Mr E. Bary for the vicepresidency of the New Zealand Institute. The sum of £2 was voted towards a presentation to Mr Parkinson, who has retired from the position of general secretary. The election of officers resulted as under: — President, Mr W. J. Metcalf; vicepresidents, Miss Caughley and Messrs J. C. Hall and J. A. Lockhart; secretary and treasurer, Mr L. R. Cutforth; auditor, Mr E. C. Hurdsfield; executive committee, Mrs Robinson, Miss Gray, Messrs C. J. McLean, A. J. Trevena and J. H. Hill; delegate to conference, Mr W. J. Metcalf; reporting secretary, Mr J. H. Hill. BOROUGH AFFAIRS. There was a poor attendance at last night’s meeting of the Waipukurau Borough Council, the Mayor, Mr G. Hunt, presiding. The annual grant of £l5 was made to the dental clinic. A grant of £3 3/- was voted to the Fire Brigade, towards the expenses of the team attending the demonstration at Carterton during Easter, A letter from S. W. Strang asking on behalf of clients, for the preparation of a farm lands list, under the provisions of the Urban Farm Land Rating Act, was referred to the borough solicitors. A grant of £l5 was made to the funds of the Citizens’ Library Committee. The manager of the Gas Works reported an increase of 3600 cubic feet of gas manufactured last month as compared with the corresponding month of last year. The Water Works report showed an increase in the pumping of 200,000 gallons. In accordance with notice the Mayor moved a special order reducing the number of councillors from eight to six. This will be confirmed at the April meeting. At the weekly “500” card party of the Fire Brigade the prizes were won by Mrs Mason and Mr It. F. Came.
