HASTINGS SCHOOLS

COMBINED SPORTS MEETING MAHORA ANNEX CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITION KEEN. The annual athletic sports meeting held by the Hastings combined primary schools sports association was conducted at Nelson Park, Hastings, yesterday, and the fixture was a decided success in every respect. The pupils of the five primary schools in Hastings together with those of the Havelock North School gathered in their hundreds to compete for the Herbert. Smith Trust Cup, and whilst the Mahora representatives more or less had a clear sweep in the placings, competition was exceptionally keen. Some excellent racing was seen, and from start to finish of the particularly lengthy programme there was an atmosphere of keen but good-natured rivalry, the competitors lacking nothing in the way of vocal support from the non-contesting pupils of their respective schools. The points aggregate cup was annexed by Mahora, who repeated last year’s success. Parkvalo filled second place, the points obtained by the various schools being as follow: — • Pts. Mahora 684 Parkvalo 23} Havelock North .. .. 17} Hastings West .. .. 17 Central 16} Convent 13 The boys’ championship saw the honours shared by three, G. Foulds and R. RobertsOn (both of Mahora) and A. Lucas (Hastings West), all of whom gained five points. The girls’ championship went to Edna Baker, of Mahora, who secured six points. Mildred Bennett, of Havelock North, and Audrey Taafe, of Mahora, were joint runners-up. A word of praise is due to the officials for the excellent management of the meeting. Their task was a tremendous one, but everything passed off most satisfactorily and in a decidedly efficient manner. They had a long and arduous day, as in the morning there were the innumerable eliminating heats run-off, and the afternoon programme alone consisted of over 40 events. They are to be heartily congratulated upon the success of the meeting. The results of the finals are as follows, the abbreviations being Mahora (M.), Parkvale (P-), Hastings West (H.W.).
