WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
HATUMA BRANCH There was an attendance of 36 members at the recent meeting of the Hatuma Women’s Institute, which was held in the Hatuma Hall. After the singing of the institute song, Mrs Riddle (president) gave a short address on the motto “Never, trouble trouble, till trouble troubles you,” after which she called upon Mrs J. Hobson to give a resume of the work done at the Federation meeting which had been held recently at Takapau. A collection of old photographs of members, caused much amusement, the competition as to identification being won by Mrs. L, Bishop, A much appreciated demonstration of smocking was given by Mrs Morton, of Takapau, who also displayed some pretty samples of her work. Mrs Morton was aceorded a hearty vote of thanks. The collection of flowers was very beautiful and was afterwards sent to Pukeora Sanatorium. The competition for best collection of spring flowers was won by Mrs Lawther, Mrs J. Hobson being second and Mesdames H. Hobson senr., Howard and Riddell, third. It was decided that the next monthly meeting be a social afternoon and an invitation be extended to members of the Waipukurau Institute. The competition is., to be the best article made from a sugar bag. Mrs H. Duckworth, of Waipukurau, will also give a demonstration on moccassin making. During the afternoon potatoes were distributed to the members to grow for the institute competition. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames H. Hobson, Metcalfe, Riddell, S. Robinson and the Misses M. and E. Hobson, Riddell, and M. Robinson. The singing of the National Anthem brought an instructive and enjoyable afternoon to a close. TIKOKINO BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Tikokino Women’s Institute was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, on Wednesday, the proceedings opening with the Institute song. The balance sheet from the daffodil show was read and adopted, £2 being donated to the Wairoa earthquake relief, Mrs Parkinson gave a most interesting report of the half-yearly Federation meeting, held at Takapau, for which she was accorded a hearty vqte of thanks. Mrs Duckworth, of Waipukurau, gave a most interesting demonstration on glove making, members taking a very keen interest and a glove circle was formed. Mrs T. Parkinson was the winner of the competition for the best cushion, thq cost of the material pot exceeding 3/-. Mrs Duckworth gave an amusing recitation and received a hearty vote of thanks for the recitation and demonstration.
