SOCIAL EVENING

ST. MATTHEW’S CHURCH CHOIR. On Tuesday evening last the members of St. Matthew’s choir and their friends held a very enjoyable social in the Parish Hall. About 60 people were present, who all thoroughly enjoyed the various items arranged for the evening’s entertainment. The hostesses appointed for the evening, Mesdames Bark, Burton, Bryant, Jenkinson, and Miss M. Collins, ably assisted by Messrs Bark, Bryant and Thomas, were indefatigable in their efforts to make everyone happy. Musical items, dances, and competitions kept the fun going until the “witching hour of midnight” sounded, and there was not a dull moment throughout the evening. - A paper-tearing competition produced some clever as well as weird and wonderful animals and birds, from a cassowary to Mickey Mouse, the two winning exhibits being particularly good. A novel community sing conducted by Mr J. A. Bark, who introduced a sight reading test and antiphonal singing, was a very popular item, the comments of the conductor with reference to enunciation, such as “welcomingim home’’ for “welcoming him home” causing much laughter. A “musical parcel” competition was won by Mrs C. B. Spinney, “paper tearing” by Mrs Deans and Miss Flbrrie Bark, and a waltz test by Miss D. Symonds and M r A. Matthews. Musical items were given by Mrs Spinney, Misses des Forges, D. Symonds, W. Rigg, and Messrs Bryant and Thomas, who contributed vocal solos, and a pianoforte solo by Mr Spinney al! of which were greatly enjoyed. Tne accompaniments were played by Mr and Mrs Spinney and Miss Collins. The latter, with the assistance of Mrs Bark, also supplied music for dancing The evening was brought to a close by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne,” and hopes were expressed that a similar function would be held in the near future. A dainty supper supplied by the lady members of the choir was handed round during the evening, and was greatly appreciated.
