STOCK PRICES

STORT7DRD LODGE SALE. KEEN DEMAND FOR DAIRY STOCK. AU the staff engaged at Stortford Lodge yesterday had one of the most arduous sales ever experienced at tin.season of the year. The sale was in full swing from 10 a.m. until 5.15 pan lhe record yarding of beef was responsible for a sharp drop in prices, although outside orders were responsible lor lilting a large proportion ol the entry, estimated up to 250 head, a number which js frequently the total offering. Undoubtedly this part of Hawkes Bay has had a wonderful season since last February in producing beef cattle. Cow and heifer beef having advanced much more in price per hundred during recent' weeks thau medium weight ox beef, the reduction in price was much more noticeable in all female stock.

The bulk of the beef offering wilt soM, but in a few instances vendors decided to withdraw their cattle in hopes that they might be successful m securing better values. Whether this was advisable, time will prove. Heavy-weight bullocks were sold at 12/- f>er hundred, medium and lightweights ranging about 15/- per hundred. Prime heifer sold at 13/- to 14 - per hundred, and prime cow at 12/6 per hundred.

Vendors of fat sheep suffered a rudeshock, prices for all classes of fat sheep with the exception of spring iambs bting down 1/- to 2/-. One buyer with an outside order operated heavily, but competition from local butchers was not sufficiently keen to carry this buyer along. A number of vendors passed their stock at auction, one auctioneer jocularly remarking that his clients were in touel. with London, therefore preferred to hold their stock It might have been truthfully stated that they were out of touch with London, otherwise they may have better appreciated the price offered yesterday.

Several pens of heavy shorn prime ewes, offered on account of Mr R Harding, Raukawa, realised up to 7/9. Heavy prime /shorn wethers sold at 10/6, and unfinished shorn wethers at 8/-. A large proportion of the entry of shorn ewes sold at 6/-. Mr H. McLeod offered some heavy prime lambs off his Ngatarawa property, topping the market at 15/4. Medium spring lambs sold from 12/- to 13/-.

Whether owing to the late hour when the store sheep were offered, or to the fact that numerous farmers are now closing large areas for grass-seed, store sheep met with a very dragging safe. Any sales made were at much reduced prices, the difference in value in woolly hoggets being equal to 2/The greater part of the entry was passed at tho hammer.

About 1,000 store cattle were entered for the sale, but several vendors decided to withdraw their entry when they found that there was difficulty in securing yard room. Several consignments of useful three-year steers were included in the offering, a large number of this class being soM in the neighbourhood of £3. Prices generally for store cattle at yesterday’s sale were slightly easier, although buyers were prepared to operate right up to the conclusion of the sale.

There was one bright spot at yesterday’s sale, this being the dairy section, where the sale was followed by keen buyers. Heifers and cows showing quality and close to profit made better value than any previous sale this season. Fifteen-months Jersey heifers made up to £4 12/6, competition from Southern Hawke’s Bay and Manawatu forcing a local grazier to pay the above figure. BROKERS’ REPORTS. The Associated Auctioneers report having held their annual weekly sale at Stortford Lodge yesterday, when they offered a record yarding of over 700 fat cattle with a good yarding of store cattle and sheep.
