CRUELTY TO ANIMALS

CHARGES OF CRUELTY PROBATION FOR TWO FARMERS Invercargill, Aug. 31. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day Charles Arnold and William Robert Braithwaite, farmers, of Otapiri, appeared on charges of cruelty to animals in that horses owned by them were insufficiently fed. Arnold was also charged similarly in respect of his two dogs. Counsel for the S.P.C.A. said that a visit to Braithwaite’s farm revealed that seven horses had met their deaths within a period of seven months. Evidence would be produced to the effect that their deaths were due to starvation. The Magistrate convicted both defendants and placed them on probation for twelve months, characterising their mental attitude as horrible and dreadful and one of callous indifference to the animals in this case.
