OMAKERE SCHOOL BALL

A RECORD ATTENDANCE. From Our Own Correspondent. The Omakere school children held their annual fancy dress ball, when there was a record attendance of both children and adults. The hall was prettily decorated with red and black (the school colours) streamers and lanterns. In the early part of the evening the children gave some concert items which were very pleasing to the listeners. The young folk hold the floor until ten o’clock, when they were supplied with a sumptuous supper provided by the ladies of the district. The winners of the fancy dress costumes were:—Girls, Hilda Schley (AVelsh Witch) and Thelma Spottswood (Rabbit); boys, Gordon Sutherland (Little Coon) and Gordon Jackson (Admiral). The children’s Monte Carlo waltz winners were Aliss Jean Linton and Master B. Moriarty.

The music for the evening was supplied by the Syncopators Orchestra, with extras played by Mrs Linton, Aliss E. Cheer, Alcssrs Cosgrove and A. Kittow. The number of encores demanded shows the wonderful music provided by the players.

Various competitions were held, the winners being Mrs A. Thompson and Mr J. Connor. The adults’ Monte Carlo waltz was in favour of Miss Joyce Cole and partner, while during an interval of dancing Miss Cosgrove played a zylophone solo which was very much appreciated by those present. Messrs Macfarlanc and Hunt carried

out the duties of M.C.’s in their usual] manner.

During the evening Mr S. Linton, the school commissioner, in well chosen words, thanked Mrs W. Cole (the organiser), Mr A. Thompson (the school teacher), and all those who had helpei to make the evening such a success.
