BUS OWNER’S LOST LICENSE
AN INDIGNATION MEETING. PROTEST AGAINST LEGISLATION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Waimate, June 14. A largely attended indignation meeting discussed the position of Andrew Shanks, who lost his license for a bus between Waimate and Timaru. Shanks lost a leg in an accident and purchased a bus business in May, 1931, with the compensation money therefrom. The local licensing authority licensed Shanks, but a competitor appealed and the Appeal Court cancelled it. The meeting, which included Ministers of religion, the Mayor (Mr Dash) and Mr Bitchener, M.P.. agreed that Shanks’s service was satisfactory and protested against legislation which forced him off the run and provided no compensation. It was agreed to support him in any transport business undertaken, also to suggest that the Railway Department engage him in the transport of passengers from Waimate to Stud holme in place of the railway bus.
