U.S. PROHIBITION
REPUBLICAN DISSENSION. EFFECT ON PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION. (Received 14, 10.30 a.m.) Chicago, June 13. The swiftly-rising whirlpool of Republican dissension over prohibition engulfed the chosen representatives of the party to-day. On the eve of their national convention to-morrow they are ready to re-nominate President Hoover and sentiment- is turning definitely to Vice-President Curtis for a running mate; all the lesser disputes over platform and procedure seemed headed for harmonious decision but no one any longer expected harmony on the question of prohibition. The prediction of a plank acceptable to all of the United States had gone up in the smoke of the most furious platform battle that any Republican convention has seen since the League of Nations dispute in 1920.
Haggard and plainly discouraged after many hours in conference, tho high commanders of the party continued their efforts to reach a compromise while indignant “drys” ami insistent “wets” hammered at the doors.
