BASKETBALL

HASTINGS COMPETITIONS LAST WEEK’S GAMES. COMMENT ON THE PLAY. Westco 6 v., St.. Matthew’s 2. — This was quite an even game. Wesco’s forwards were surer of goaling. St. Matthew’s need practice, as they did not make use of the opportunities they had, which were very many. Nothing is more disheartening to centres and defence to have no results from their efforts. The centres of both teams played a good game, clearing well. St. Matthew’s forwards do not clear from the defence, and as a result they are inclined to take too many long shots at the goal. Westco’s defence played a strong game, but L. Stewart is apt to hold her opponent. At this time of the season all club captains should see that their members play in the registered uniform.

H.S.O.G. 17 v. C.O.G. (A) 11.—M. Downing, C.O.G. defence, was particularly strong, and saved her side on many occasions. M. Williams threw well in the second spell, and V. Taylor is a splendid forward, rather short, but a groat worker. M. Wyatt threw most goals for H.5.0.G., her throwing being sure. In the centre, 'D. Farmery and G. Giles improved in the second half for H.5.0.G., and A. Marigold played good defence. D. Williamson and M. Lomas, for C.0.G., also played well.

Diamond R. 15 v. West End 5. — Diamond K showed great improvement in this match, their forwards’ playing and throwing being ever so much better. D. Griffiths played a good game in the centre, and for West End, M. Rushton worked well in this third.

Rangers 9 v. C.O.G. (B) 7.— Neither of these teams showed any remarkable play, but Rangers proved themselves tho superior team by a small margin. The game was fairly even throughout, A. Brimmer, for C.0.G., passing well in the centre. Owing to the unfavourable weather conditions, no games were played on Saturday. JUNE 3rd TOURNAMENT. The detailed results of this have already been published, and from these it can be seen that in each grade there was very keen competition. In the senior grade, H.S.O.G. (A) were beaten by U.S. (A) in the first life, after a very good game, but meeting them again in the second life found the tables turned, and O.G. found themselves in the awkward position of having again to play H.S. However, after another evenly-fought game, O.G. were able to uphold by 6 points to 5. Both teams played an excellent game, and one cannot single out any one third as having played much better than another. The shorter the time to play, the quicker the passing, and this was particularly notable on Friday. It would be hard to find two more evenlymatched teams as these two proved to be, and the standard of play must como up to that of any of the other centres. These two teams were to have met again on Saturday for the last match of the first round of the competitions, but owing to the rain all matches were postponed. The full-time match will be another struggle between these two teams, and will be well worth watching.

Junior: It was remarkable that in this grade also it was School and O.G. having to play out for the final, and both put in some very good play. However, in the grand final O.G. seemed to tire, and their forwards’ shooting was uncertain, leaving High School with an easy win by 4 points to nil. School: Two High School teams, D and E, played interesting games against each other for a winning place and, strange to say, the E team were successful in winning the final match against the D team by a small margin—• 4 to 3. GAMES FOR THURSDAY.

The games to be played at Ebbett Park on Thursday, 9th instant, are as follows (these will conclude the first round): — 2 p.m.: C.O.G. (A) v. Diamond R; referee, Mrs Carberry; Court A. Westco v. Rangers; referee, Miss Cunnold; Court B 2.45: H.S.O.G v. West End; referee, Miss C. Hannah; Court A. C.O.G. (B) v. St. Matthew’s; referee, Mrs Nesbit; Court B. Westco—Grounds committee.
