DRAIN OF RELIEF WORKS

MASTERTON COUNTY COMPLAINS GOVERNMENT AID NEEDED Masterton, June 6. The Masterton County Council decided to-day that it could not carry on with relief works under the conditions now imposed by the Main Highways Board towards economising in highways expenditure, as the council had not sufficient funds for transport and other costs owing to reduced income. Unless some relief were given by the Government in that direction it would have no alternative but to close down relief works after June 30.

The county was finding work for onethird of the total unemployed in the whole of Wairarapa or of the total number in Masterton the council was providing work for 70 per cent. The cost to the council at the present rate of expenditure was £4OOO per annum. The council, however, put forward proposals for the establishment of relief camps to absorb about 80 men and offered £5OO towards the cost.
