A “PLAY READERS'” PARTY

ENJOYABLE AFTERNOON. On Friday a most interesting afternoon was spent by members of the Women’s Club Play-Reading Circle, who were entertained by the leader, Mrs Perrin, at her home. The large drawing-room was prettily arranged for the guests, bowls of pink roses being here and there. Mrs Perrin made a delightful hostess, and looked very charming in a long Vic torian frock of blue and silver shot taffetas, with a bertha collar and deep hem of lace. Each member had been told that they must read or recite a very brief selection, and this proved most enter taining, some being serious, some amusing, and all interesting. Mrs E. V. Simpson was given a large compendium of pale grey note papei for being voted the winner, her clever recitation being about “a very tired woman.” Others who gave items were Mrs Webber “On Courage”; Mr® Goddard, “The Little Dog’s Day” (Rupert Brooke); Mrs White, “The Everlasting Mercy” (Masefield); Mrs Wright, recitation; Mrs Lovell-Smith, “Marget Pow”; Mrs Lloyd, a serious, and a humorous poem; Mrs Hugh Baird, a description of the Braemar gathering; Mrs Aitken, “Apple blossoms” (a pastoral poem); Mrs Gilbertson, “Little Deeds”; Mrs Hursthouse, Cautionary Tale by Belloc, Miss Ford, Romance of the Clematis; Mrs Comrie a reading. “Tied”; Miss Pattison, “The Kokalo” (Forest). After the little programme a de licious tea was handed round, and latei some delectable strawberry ices. Mrs Lloyd, in a brief speech, then thanked Mrs Perrin lor her very enjoy able little party, and the guests joined ill singing “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.”
