MOTORS ON HILLS

WHO SHOULD GIVE WAY? UPWARD OR DOWNWARD I Should downhill traffic give way to uphill traffic? This question was raised at the meeting of the Wellington Automobile Club executive last evening, when Mr A. J. Toogood moved:— “That the existing practice in regard to downhill traffic giving way to uphill traffic should be reversed.” In support of his proposal, Mr Toogood said that downhill traffic had not the same control as the other, even with good brakes, and could not pull up on steep grades. With self-starters and good brakes the uphill traffic should give way. Little support was forthcoming for the nsition. Mr Palliser instanced a case on the Paekakariki Hill when a woman driver, who was rather nervous, pulled up to give way to a car that was descending at a good speed. In trying to start the car again she lost her head and the car ran back. That was the danger in uphill traffic giving way to downhill traffic. Th 0 motion -apsed.
