DANCING IN STREETS
ROTORUA PLANS CARNIVAL. PROTEST BY RETAILERS. Tho proposal of the amusement committee of the Rotorua Borough Council to hold dancing in the treets on Christmas Eve to inaugurate the carnival week, caused considerable discussion at last week’s meeting of the council. It was proposed that King Carnival should parade the streets acaccompanied by pierrots, and that stops be made at various places and the streets closed for dancing. One councillor raised a vigorous protest on behalf of shopkeepers. He urged that Christmas Eve was a hardest period for all retailers and anything which distracted the public from buying was a serious matter. The evening was the time when shopkeepers took more than during the whole of the day, and their opportunity should not be interfered with. The matter will be further discussed at the next meeting of the general carnival committee and a compromise may be arrived at by not starting the procession until after 10 p.m.
