WELCOME DOWNPOUR OF RAIN After much threatening a steady rain commenced to fall here about 8 o’clock on Sunday evening and it continued throughout the night. Occasional showers fell in the district yesterday, and indications point to still further falls. The change was badly needed, but a good forty-eight hours’ rain is wanted to make any appreciable difference. On Saturday, playing on Coronation Park, Waipawa District High School cricket team defeated Takapau by an innings and 11 runs. Batting first Waipawa declared at two for 167, J. Knobloch being unbeated at 104. This is his second century this season. Ho is a tower of strength to his team not only in batting but in bowling, for on .Saturday he captured three of Takapau ’s wickets in the first innings for seven runs, and three in the second for 31. Takapau’s totals were 49 and 107. Unfortunately Knobloch developed acute illness after the match on Saturday, and was operated on on Sunday for appendicitis. When the 10 per cent. 1 ‘ cut ’ ’ came into operation the question of reducing the w r ages of the borough staff was discussed by the council, and it was decided to defer the matter for six months. Wallace, Critchley, 20. Dyson, Minogue, Holt, 24; Harker, Larkin, Adeane, 13. McKay, King, Fraser Patterson 27; Bishop, Jull, Grenside, Dailey, 11. Sullivan, King, Coutts, Dailey, 24; Parkin, Harker, Minogue, Wills, 21. In a challenge match for the Brewer Buttons, Grenside and Patterson defeated the holders, Harker and J. Walker, by 15 to 14. The Murray Feathers also changed hands, Woods, Adeane, Critchley and Benson beating McKay, Grenside. Fraser and Patterson by 24 to 20.
