SATURDAY’S RESULTS. Hokitika, December 27. The Westland Racing Club’s Meeting was conducted in glorious weather. The course was good and the attendance was also good. The totalisator handled £6204 10s for the day, making a total of £13,110 for the meeting, as against £12,410 in 1928. Last year a oue-day meeting returned £10,026. Results :— Novice Handicap.—3 Counter March 1,2 Minerva! 2, 1 Ringing Cheer 3. Also ran: Gay Nita, Lady Lack/iam, Rio Rita, Haldon, Mataa, Miss Anomaly, Thurnham Lass (all 9.0), Lady Valkyrie 7.5. The following accounts of the running of the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap are taken trom an exchange. :— When the field paraded for the Auckland Cup, Courageous and My Own were missing, leaving a dozen candidates to contest ijie big twomile event. Nightmarch (£5283) was first fancy, with Star Stranger (£4267), and In the Shade (£3061), also strongly supported, while Gay Crest, who was first past the post, carried £B6O, and Motere, placed first after an inquiry, £225. When they had settled down, Concentrate, Gay Crest, and In the Shade were in front from Nightmarch. Gav Cockade, Seatown, Nassock, Motere, Count Palatine and Paquito next. Gray Crest ran to the front as they crossed the top, with Seatown, Star Stranger, In the Shade and Concentrate racing in that order. Passing the stand, Standfast was in front with Gay Crest, Gay Cockade, Seatown, and Count Palatine all handy. Then eanie Star Stranger, In the Shade, Concenrate, Motere, and Nassock, with Nightmarch and Paquito last. Along the back, Standfast, Gay Crest and Gay Cockade were still in front, with Seatown, Count Palatine. Nassock, and Star Stranger next,' followed by In the Shade, Concentrate, and Motere. Then cafne Paquito and Nightmarch. The last-named moved up, but got a check at the six furlong post. Crossing the top Standfast was still in the van, attended by pay Cockade, Gay Crest and In the Shade. Then came Seatown and Concentrate, with Nightmarch, Count Palatine, and Paquito bunched. Gay Cockade was first into the straight from Gay Crest and Motere, the trio being followed by Concentrate, Count Palatine and Nightmarch. In a good finish Gay Crest beat Motere by a neck, with Concentrate two lengths away third. Paquito was fourth, and then came Gay Cockade, Seatown, In the Shade, Nightmareh, Star Stranger, Count Palatine, Nassock and Standfast. The stewards instituted an inquiry concerning interference with Motere by Gay Crest a few yards from the post. Gay Crest came right across Motere. After consideration, the stewards decided to reverse the placings of the first two horses, making Motere first and Gay Crest second. The winner paid a dividend of over half a century. RAILWAY HANDICAP. Courtsey was the only defection in the Railway Handicap. Most money came for Chromadyne, who carried £3195, next in demand being Pegaway and Karapoti (bracketed), £3441. Hunting Cry carried £l4lB. Tenterden broke the tapes just before they were let go and delayed the, start. When the starter let thesu go, Hunting Day, Silver-mine, Toxeunia, Great Star and Autopay were racing in that order, but Silvermine was in front crossing the top, attended by Hunting Cry, Autopay, Hunting Day and Karapoti, and then came, Praise, Great Star, Chromadyne, and, Royal Tea, Autopay led into the straight from Karapoti and Silvermine. They were attended by Hunting Cry, Groat Star, and Praise. In the run to the post Hunting Cry, Pegaway, and Great Star were all hard at it, and Huting Cry prevailed by a neck from Great Star, who beat Pegaway by o similar distance. Silvermine was fourth, and then came Karapoti, Toxeuma, Hunting Dav, Chromadyne, Praise. Autopay, White Wings and Paganelli,
