NAPIER BOARD MEETING.

BUSINESS AND PRINCIPALS’ REPORTS.

The monthly meeting of the Napier High School Board of Governors was held last night. Present: The Rev. J. A. Asher (presiding), Messrs. J. P. Williamson, R. C. Wright. C. D. Wilson. H. Hill and F. K. de Castro. The Napier Harbour Board advised that the question of the stop bank on the Tutaekuri river was referred to the Rivers Board for consideration. The board was now awaiting a reply. With reference to the flooding of trees on the boys’ school site, the Napier Borough Council advised that it did not recognise any liability in the matter. ■ The Director-General of Agriculture advised that he would be glad to arrange for an officer of his department to report on the board's farm proposal It was reported that the officer had since visited Napier and his report was later considered by +he board in committee. PRINCIPALS’ REPORTS. Miss D. M. Arthur, ‘principal of the girls’ school, in her report to the board stated that the roll number was 286 in the senior school and 47 in the junior department the average attendance being 258.8 and 43.4. A number of girls had loft recently to take up positions and several had withdrawn owing to ill health. In a recent secondary school examination for senior free places and higher leaving certificates over 75 per cent, of the pupils eligible gained either a senior free place or an extension of their junior free place. Regret was expressed at the Mayor and his special committee declining to arrange for a visit of Their Excellencies to the school next week, as it was thought that other schools iqight make similar application. This was regarded ns a pity as so many girls from the school each year went into tho teaching profession and tho direct personal effect of such a visit would have given them something very lasting and worth while to carry with them in their work among the children.

The headmaster of the hoys’ school (Mr. W. T. Foster) reported that the average roll was 269 and the average attendance was 92.3 per cent. The annual match against the Palmerston North eleven had 1 been fixed for Tuesday and Wednesday. December 17 and 18. This season the school would travel to Palmerston North. The inspectors visited the school yesterday and would again today for the purpose of looking intjo the senior free places and higher leaving certificates.
