SPLAYED CORNERS

A WISE PROVISION. HASTINGS COUNCIL’S DECISION About two years ago the Mayor (Mr G. A. Maddison) mentioned to the Hastings Borough Council the desirability of having all new buildings on street corners splayed back so as to give greater visibility to anyone approaching tho intersection. The council was in favour of such action and a by-law was to be compiled to govern this matter. However, for some reason or other the compilaton of a by-law was lost sight of, and nothing 'further was done until the Mayor mentioned the question again last evening. He seated that quite recently the matter had again been brought forcibly before his notice because of a permit that had been issued for a building to be erected at. the corner of Karamu and Avenue roads. In explanation of a suggestion he was about to make he explained that provision was contained in Sections 34 and 29 of the Town Planning Act, to allow the council to insist that all buildings erected at street corners in the future shall be splayed back, and also that all subdivisions of properties shall have the street corners splayed back as well. “So that no misunderstanding shall occur in the future, I recommend that this council resolves that no permit shall be granted for the erection of any building at any street corner, unless such building is splayed back to a minimum of 6 feet on each street; also that the same action be taken in regard to future subdivisions of properties, i.e., that no plan will be approved unless the street corners are splayed back,” continUbd Mr Maddison. “Of course, the council might be involved in claims for compensation for the land taken,” he added, “but 1 feel certain that the amounts would bo very small indeed; and there would be an undoubted benefit in tho adoption of tho recommendations I have made.” The Mayor’s report was adopted.
