AWARD DEFIED
TIMBER WORKERS START AT THEIR OWN TIME EMPLOYERS’ COUNTER MOVE (United Pres- Association—By CableCopyright.] [Australian anti N Z Press Association.) Melbourne, Jan. 21. The first definite move to defy Mr. Justice Lukin’s award of forty-eight hours for the timber industry was made to-day, when 3000 employees in various mills ignored the 7.30 whistle and began at 8 a.m. They took an hour for lunch instead of threequarters, and stopped work at 4 p.m., the usual time. They intend to work four hours on Saturday mornings) making forty-four for the week instead of forty-eight. The employers’ counter movement will be to pay the men pro rata on the basis of a forty-eight hours week, which means that if they work only forty-four hours, four hours will be deducted from their pay. The Lord Mayor of Melbourne .-nd Sir Arthur Duckham are trying to bring the parties together before the trouble spreads.
