TENNIS AT WAIPAWA

(Special Representative). TOURNAMENT FINALS. The final game in the annual tournament of the Waipawa Tennis Club was played on Saturday afternoon, when Hobin and Miss Astle (6) defeated M. R. Smith and Miss Hagitt (scr.) by 60—47. In the early stages of this contest only a few points separated the respective couples at any time, but towards the end the first-mentioned established a substantial lead, and, displaying consistently good form had no difficulty in registering a win. The tournament proved a great success—no less socially than from playing and controlling points of view.

The entries for the tournament totalled 500, and it is evident that the prestige of the club is such as to command the continued confidence of players from far as well as near. The president (Mr. E. Oakenfull), secretary (Mr. F. M. Tickner), and committee can be heartily congratulated on the success achieved. Incidentally, special credit is due to the committee of ladies responsible for the morning and afternoon tea features. In nature’s gifts—beautiful trees —the Waipawa ground is liberally endowed, and this factor adds greatly to the comfort of players, also spectators.
