ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

OAR OVERTURNS ON AWATOTO ROAD. Two children rushing out on the centre of the roadway from behind a horse-driven vehicle were responsible for a motor-car driven by Mr. H. Dalton, a taxi-driver, of Napier, turning two complete somersaults on the Awatoto road about 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon, the car finishing up on its hood. Although the accident had the appearance of being a serious one the persons concerned fortunately escaped with little injury. The car was only slightly damaged. It appears that Dalton, with a passenger, was travelling towards Napier and when near the Gun Club grounds he noticed a greengrocer’s express approaching. When almost abreast of this vehicle two little children suddenly rushed out from behind it in an endeavour to cross the road. Dalton swung his car away from them but struck one child. The car continued across the road after the accident and toppled down the three-foot dip at the side, turning over twice. Luckily for the occupants, it was a closed-in car and the top stood the test well, undoubtedly saving them from serious injuries. Both Dalton and his fellow passenger escaped practically unhurt while the child, after treatment, was taken to the Napier Hospital. Her condition is not serious and to-day she was reported to be doing well. The car was afterwards brought into Napier under its own power.

Thomas Morgan, aged 35, single, died in the Waikato Hospital this morning as a result of an accident a week ago. The deceased was labouring on road construction on Mamaku Hill towards Rotorua, fell from a truck and sustained concussion.
