Thousands are daily visiting the flyinfl boat “Calcutta,” which is lying in the Thames at Westminster. Constructionally the machine is most interesting. Besides passenger and luggage accommodation there is a stewards’ galley which includes a stove, ice chest, and lavatory, and the cabin is ventilated by hot and cool air. The seat® are fitted with air cushions which are instantly removable and usable as lifebelts. Smoking is permitted as the petrol is not kept in the hull. 1
lhe Calcutta’s construction ensures water tightness and speed. Her Marconi installation has a range of 400 miles and she has a petrol capacity of 1000 miles at an average speed of 100 miles per hour. Mr. Short, her builder, declared it would run to Marseilles and Egypt, and may eventually run to Colombo and on to Darwin, bringing Australia within seventeen days of England. COURTENAY’S RESCUE. A wireless from Sydney states that the Southern Cross flies to Melbourne on Sunday. Squadron-Leader C K. Kingsford-Smith. M.C.. A.F.C., returns to Sydney on Wednesday in a borrowed ’plane to be present at the A.T.F annual reunion. He then receives a cheque for £lOOO from the Returned Soldiers' Association.
