CARGO PILLAGING
DEPLORABLE POSITION
COMMISSION'S 1921 REPORT.
LLOYD’S COMMENTS.

(Received 27, 9.40 a.m) London, Aug. 26. Commenting on the pilferage report “Lloyd's List” says the natural conclusion from the figures given is that most pilferage stirl is, as it was when the Royal Commission reported in 1921, carried out when the cargo is being landed or shipped m Australian ports. It is deplorable that six years after the issue of so vigorous a report the evil is still rampant.
The paper hopes that the facts now published “will stimulate all interests concerned in transport at Australian ports to unite m removing this blot on the reputation of some of the world's finest harbours.”—(A. and N.Z.)
At the Wellington Harbour Board meeting on Thursday, it was stated that claims for pillage against the Board during the pastyear amounted to only £1 16/3 One member, however, said that this was not by a long wav all the pillage that had been paid for by shipping companies. Other members took exception to this and the suggestion was made that the shipping companies should give the amount they had to pay at respective ports, so that it could be seen what the position actually was.
