HELP FOR THE UNEMPLOYED

A meeting was held in the Havelock North Town Board office last night to discuss ways and means of raising further funds for the unemployeu. After some discussion it was agreed to run a dance in the Village Hall next Friday, September 2, at 8 p.m. Messrs. Nimon Bros, agreed to run a bus free to a"d from Hastings and Mr Neil Donnelly offered pay for the music.

A strong committee was set up to attend to the final arrangements, and it is hoped that the public will co-operate in order to swell the funds of this worthy cause. Any donations towards the supper, etc., will be thankfully received. FAREWELL TO HEADMASTER. The parents and children assembled at the Havelock North District School yesterday afternoon to do honour to the headmaster.’Mr H. Speight, who is severing his connection with the school and the teaching profession after about 40 years' service. In the short time Mr Speight has been in Havelock, he has earned the affection of his pupils, of the committee, of the teaching staff, and al] those with whom he has come in contact As the chairman (Mr J. D. Heenan) remarked, the school had shown more improvement in a single year through Mr. Speight than through anyone else. They had to thank him. and the public, for the beautiful piano now in use and Mr Speight himself for the pictures which will shortly adorn the school. On behalf of the committee he wished to hid G'od-speed to Mr. and Mrs. Speight and their family.

The Rev. R. Waugh, speaking on behalf of the Havelock North Bible Class, said Mr Speight took with him the best wishes of the whole community. Mr Speight’s moral sympathy had been greatly appreciated by the ministers, as they found that his influence had always been for the making of useful men and women of the future out of the boys and girls of to-day. The Rev. Canon Maclean endorsed the previous speaker’s remarks. Mr E Neilson, the first assistant, on behalf of the staff and scholars, then presented Mr Speight with a handsome 8-day bedroom clock, while the scholars sang “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow" and gave three hearty cheers.

Mr. Speight, in a most thoughtful address, thanked the donors on behalf of Mrs Speight and his family for their many acts of kindness. Previous to the presentation the following children gave items: Song, Standard V.; recitation, Glen Davies; song, John Wood; sword dance, Phyllis McKeown; recitation. Jean Russell; song. Joyce Harvey; recitamn. Thorn Davidson; Highland Fling. Cecilia Robertson; recitation Jack Bee.

The fortnightly dance was held in the Foresters’ Hall at Havelock North, last evening. Music was supplied by Mrs Dunn, and extras were played by Miss Ruby Lilev and Miss Miriam Miller Mr T. Butler acted as M.C An ejfeellent supper was provided by the ladies.
