HERETAUNGA DAIRY CO.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING,

PRESIDENT ADDRESSES SHAREHOLDERS.

Well over 100 shareholders of the Heretaunga Co-operative Dairy Company, Ltd., met in the Assembly Hall, Hastings this afternoon when the 35th annual general meeting or the shareholders was held, the retiring president, Mr. G. C, Lowe, occupying the chair.

in moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet (previously published in the “Tribune”), the chairman stated that he was pleased to be able to predict brighter prospects for the coming year. There had been quite a surplus of butter during the last season and certainly there would also be a surplus this year but the company had had an offer of 1/5} f.o.b. This had not been definitely accepted as word had been received from London that the amount might be even bettered if the company shipped. The speaker then remarked (hat during the past season the cows had been in very low condition, a great number had gone to the works, and those that had “pulled through” did not put up much of a record. DE-ODERISER SUCCESSFUL. Relative to the de-oderiser, Air. Lowe explained that this had been installed during the year on the understand that if it did uot increase the butter two points then the company would not be held liable in any way for the experiment, as such it was. That it justified the guarantee wocld be seen from the fact that the grading points for the year had 1 reach ed 95 as against 92| the previous year. It was with pleasure that he reported that Mr. W .A. Tims, the company’s factory manager, had gained a gold medal for showing the best improved butter for the season. Realising that it was the quality on the Home market that built up the trade the directors had inquired through tho merchants how the deoderised butter opened up and the reply had been that it was quite satisfactory to the sellers at Home. FEEDING THE COWS. “It is an extraordinary fact that in this ideal district the average of the cows supplied to this factory is under 2001b5., continued Mr. Lowe, who thought that there was little or nothing to prevent this average being increased another 501bs. “There might be an improvement in the cow but I don’t think that it is the cow that is at fault," stated the speaker. “The trouble is in the method of feeding.” He had' been told on good authority that it was possible for the land to carry a cow to the acre for nine months but the hay would have to be obtained elsewhere. It was not fair to just give a short ration of hay to tlie cattle. It would pay the suppliers to consider this aspect as in the cream grading the second grade was Ijd less than the finest and Id less than the first grade that was provided it was up to the standard test of 35 points. After several points in the balancesheet had been explained the motion was carried. Four nominations were received for two seats on tho directorate, and on a ballot, Messrs. D. G. Begley and A. E. Morgan were elected. At the conclusion of the meeting a vote of confidence was carried in the chairman, the directors and the management.
