DELAYED SAILINGS
MAHENO AND MABAMA.
STEWARDS’ GRIEVANCES.
Sydney, Aug. L’6.
The Maheno, due to sail at 11 o’clock this morning was held up by the action of the stewards and cooks, who refused to go to sea until the chief and second stewards were replaced, the men alleging that the officers objected to were harsh and unjust in their dealings with the crew.
When it was found that the men refused duty, the company announced the postponement of the sailing until three o’clock, but at the time the stewards, dressed in mufti, walked ashore to shouts of encouragement from the remainder of the crew.
The passengers’ first intimation that the sailing was postponed was a notice posted up on the wharf that the departure was put back <util 3 o’clock. Passengers were then given the option of transferring to the Ma rama, which was due to sail at four o’clock. The Maheno stewards then sought the sympathy of the Marama stewards.
Following an interview by the representatives of the stewards of the Maheno with the stewards of the Marama the latter decidedto cease work until the demands of the Maheno stewards are acceded to. It is understood the strikers communi cated to union officials in New Zealand, who expressed themselves as opposed to the action of the strikers, whom they advised to return to work. The advice was ignored, but the indefinite hold-up of the vessels was avoided at a subsequent meeting of employers and employees, whereat a sttlement was reached and both vessels will sail to-morrow morning. A late cable from Sydney this after noon stated that the Marama got away at 10.45 a.m. for Wellington, but the Maneno was still held up.
