ATLANTIC STORM
WORST FOR MANY YEARS
LINERS TOSSED LIKE ROWBOATS,
DEATHS AND DAMAGE IN NOVA SCOTIA.

(Received 27. 10.45 a.m.) New York, Aug. 26. Five liners bfought stories of one of the most terrific storms known foi many years in the Atlantic Ocean. Five hundred passengers on th Martha Washington were ordered to stay below decks while the ship tossed like a rowboat amid mountainous waves. Five persons were slightly injured. The passengers prayed while the storm was raging. Lifeboats were smashed, ventilators were blown over, and the wireless was wrecked. Radio operators cilmbed the masts and repaired the appartus with ropes round their waists to prevent their being washed overboard.
Tlie freighter Vanderwale sent a message reporting that her lifeboats and deckhouse were gone The cap tain had two ribs broken and the mate was injured. Passengers on the steamer Mara caibo once gave up all hope of reaching land and they lauded the captain’s skill in navigating them to safety.
A fierce storm in Nova Scotia caused eight deaths and four are missing. Damage caused to property crops and shipping amounted to 1,000,000 dollars.—(A. and N.Z.)
