PETITIONS DENIED

SACCO-VANZETTI CASE PRACTICALLY ALL AVENUES OP escape; closed. GOVERNOR FULLER THE LAST RESORT. (By Cable —Press Assn. — Copyright.) (Received 23, 10.55 a.m.) New York, Aug. 22. Practically all avenues of escape for Sacco and Vanzetti were closed when Justice Stone denied a petition for a stay of sentence after counsel for the defence had made desperate haste to reach him at his summer house which is difficult of access. Chief Justice Taft, now vacationing in Canada, intimated over the telephone that he refused to come to the border and that he lacks jurisdiction in Canada. These two refusals, coupled with those of Justices Brandeis and Holmes, ended the defence counsel’s hope of gaining a stay from anyone of the four available Justices of the Supreme Court. Attempts are still being made to obtain intervention by Governor Fuller, who is now the last resort, but nothing is expected to be gained thereby At Boston, Sacca and Vanzetti refused the last rites of the Church. Mr Michael Musmanne, counsel for the defence has announced the receipt of a telegram from Chief Justice Taft refusing to receive the petitions for a stay of execution. Mr Justice Harland Stone, of the !iit«l States Supreme Court, has refused a stay of execution. —(A. and N.Z.) ALL PREPARATIONS FOB EXECUTION COMPLETED. EXTRAORDINARY PRECAUTIONS AGAINST DEMONSTRATIONS. (Received 23, 11.15 a.m.) New York, Aug. 22. All preparations for the execution are now completed. Both Sacco and Vanzetti are reported to be in better spirits than for some time past. Apparently they have given up all hope of a reprieve and are resigned to death. Sacco’s wife and Vanzetti’s sister are expected to pay final visits icier in the day. Extrabidinary precautions Lave been taken to quell anything in the nature of an outbreak. Machine guns, tear gas bombs, riot guns, high pressure hose, and other weapons are in readiness. Nearly 500 men, including 100 members of the State Constabulary have been assigned to guard the prison and will remain on duty until after the executions.

The public will be kept a considerable distance from the prison. Police reserves have been mustered.—(A. and N.Z.)
