TARAWERA BLOCK
PARTITION COMPLETE. EXCEPT A FEW SMALL AREAS. The Native Land Court concluded its sittings at Hastings on Saturday. The greater part of last week was occupied in partitioning the Tarawera Block, valued at from 5/- to £3 5./- per acre. The Ngati Tuwharetoa tribe of Taupo, were awarded 6,400 acres, representing 3.200 shares, by the Native Appellate Court and their area was cut off in the north-west of the block, where Hie land, being of least value, thev got increased acreage. Sections towards the southeast, where the rights of claimants are disputed, the whole block has been subdivided on a valuation basis. An area of 3,664 acres, principally bush, was set aside for sale for the payment of survey liens amounting to £1,400 and costs of litigation and partition. It is anticipated that a sale can he effected at a satisfactory figure as soon as the Government will remove the existing proclamation, which prohibits the native owners from selling to others than the Crown. The chairman of the Native Committee thanked the judge (Judge Gilfedder) on behalf of the owners of Tarawera, for his assistance and patience in the matter of effecting an equitable partition of a. block so difficult to subdivide.
The Court proceeded to Levin this morning, opening there to-morrow morning.
