CLAY BIRD SHOOTING.

N. A E.C. GUN CLUB. SHOOTING IN THE RAIN. A big crowd turned up for the Gun Club’s shoot on Saturday, two Taupo visitors attending. Occasional showers were experienced but they were not so as to interfere .greatly with the matches. A sweepstake was held to accustom the visitors to the trap, which resulted in Messrs. A. Dobson, A. Robottom, H. Nichol, F. N. H. Beamish, all with 9 birds accounted for. divide the prize money. Following the above shoot was the principal shoot of the day, a 15-bird open handicap for a gold wristlet watch (presented by Mrs. J. G. Parker), an E.P.N.S. entree dish, and a silver manicure set (both presented by the club). In addition an E.P.N.S. mounted oak salad bowl (presented by Mr. R. S- Alward) for the best novice performance over this trophy shoot and the one held a fortnight ago was also decided, an E.P.N.S. mounted Doulton honey jar being donated to the runner-up. Novices were all shooters on the 14 yards mark and under. A prize of one E.P.N.S. spirit flask (full) presented by Mr. T. Parker for the lowest score went to Mr. A. G. Stead, with seven birds accounted for out of the fifteen. Messrs. H. Nichol and J. Crowley with the whole of their 15 birds accounted for had to shoot off to decide who should take the trophies. The first round was the deciding factor, J. Crowley missing his bird. This gave H. Nichol the first prize and J. Crowley the second. Messrs. A. Dobson, E. Groome, F. N. H. Beamish and A. Stott, with 14 birds accounted for, had to shoot off for a decision on third prize. A. Dobson dropped out I in the first round, and with F. N. H. Beamish dropping his bird in the sixth round, this left A. Stott the winner of the third prize trophy. In the novice trophy H. Nichol proved the winner of the first trophy with the whole of his thirty birds account, ed for, whilst J. McKinnon, with 27 birds out of the thirty, secured the trophy for runner-up. A further 9-bird open sweepstake was held after the tea adjournment, when Messrs. A. Dobson, W. Nichol, H. Nichol, J. McKinnon, al! with their full quantity of birds accounted for, divided first, second and third money. A box of C.A.C. cartridges given to the lowest scorer went to A. Stott. The afternoon finished uu with an exciting five-bird double rise match, in which Messrs. A. Dobson and W. Nichol divided first and second money, and A. Robottom and H Nichol third money.

WRESTLING.

LIGHT-HEAVY CHAMPIONSHIP. THYE DEFEATS CLAPHAM. Melbourne, Aug. 21. In the world’s light-heavyweight wrestling championship. Ted Thye defeated Sam Clapham by one fall to none, in ten rounds.

BOXING.

JOHNNY SQUIRES KNOCKED OUT PAYNE FIGHTS WILDLY. Sydney, Aug. 21. At the Stadium, Payoe knocked out Johnny Squires, heavyweight champion of South' Africa, in the first round. Payne fought widly, missing freqlently, but shortly before the end of the round connected with a heavy right swing to the jaw and outed Squires.
