Play could not be commenced until after lunch, when the home team went in to bat. The opening pair scored 36, but the next two wickets fell cheaply. Youren outlasted them and altogether batted one hour lor his 44, hitting two fours and three threes. Shardlow was the next batsman to make anything of a stand, and scored a dozen from a single over off the New Zealand captain. Ho lost a promising partner in Thomas, who was dismissed by a fine catch by McGirr at the leg boundary Walmsley joined Shardlow, but the latter lasted little longer, and the last five wickets added only 52, Merritt being responsible for the collapse of the last four. Walmsley was unbeaten with 28 to his credit. Dempster was partnered with Oliver in opening the New Zealanders’ innings, but Oliver was dismissed when he bad no more than broken his duck.
