QUEENSLAND DEFEATED. N.Z. TAKES COMPLETE COMMAND. Brisbane, Aug. 20. The hockey carnival began to-day* when New Zealand played Queensland, winning by nine goals to otie. The local team was completely outclassed, but fought stubbornly against a superior combination. The New Zealanders ’play was fast, accurate and scientific. In the first half of the game the Queenslanders held them in check to some extent, and the half-time scores were two to nil in favour of the visitors. From the first whistle, however, the New Zealanders took the lead, Seccombe scoring a great goal, winding off an excellent centre movement. Even play followed until Watts scored brilliantly from a back hand stroke. The second half started with New Zealand having easily the better of the piay. Towards the end of the match the visitors took complete command, opening a rapid bombardment on the Queensland goal. Before the whistle sounded Watts had scored two more goals, Seccombe another, Be.l two. and spiers and Lusty one each. The sole scorer for Queensland was Best, who completed a fine forward movement. NAPIER GAMES. MABARO CUP. A challenge match for the Marare Cup was played at Napier on Saturday, the holders, Te Awa, proving invincible. Napier was kept on the defence except for a few attacks which failed through bad following up. The final score was: Te Awa 4, Napier nil. Miss Mortensen scored three times and Miss Simmonds once. JUNIOR GAMES.

After a good game Ruahine beat Napier by four goals to two. At Cornwall Park. Matariki surprisingly defeated Technical Old Girls by three to one. 1

SATURDAY’S MATCHES. RANGERS v. WHAKATU. ' Whakatu and Rangers met on Nel. son Park. Napier, which was verv wet and greasy. Rangers winning ov one point and taking the lead for the championship. Both teams played good, keen games. Rangers being, on Hie whole, the more aggressive. For Rangers goals were scored by Cam*bell (2). and Gray. Christensen ai A Leicester nettin- for Whakatu. Y.M.C A. v. ROVERS. The game between Y.M.C.A. and Rovers was played at Cornwall Park. Hastings, and proved rather an easv task for Y.M.C.A, They had the better of the play all through, though Rovers came to light convincingly several times, and severely tested their adversary’s defence The final scores were Y.M.C.A. 8. Rovers 3. OTAGO BEATS WELLINGTON. Wellington. August 21 At Soccer. Otago beat Wellington by four goals to two. the scoring for the winners being done bv McCormack. McLean Hooper, and Simmonds. and for the losers bv Marchment and Hooper. At half-time the score was 2-1 in Otago's favour, Otago played the better football.
