MASSACHUSSETTS COURT’S DECISION SACCO AND VANETTI MUST DIE. UNLESS FEDERAL COURT INTERVENES. ißy Cable —Press assn. — Copyright.) (Received 20, 9.55 a.m.) New York, Aug. 19. The Full Bench of the Massachusetts Supreme Court denied the Sacco-Vanzetti appeal, leaving the Supreme Court of the United States the only remaining resort. The Court overruled the exceptions taken from Justice Sanderson’s denial of a writ of error, also the exceptions from Judge Thayer’s demal of motions for a new trial, revocation of sentence, and stay of execution It also dismissed the petition for a writ of error which was presented to the Full Bench after Judge Sanderson denied a similar writ. This means that the Courts of Massachusetts have said the last word regarding the condemned men, who must be executed by August 22 unless the Federal Court prevents the sentence being carried out. Counsel have now applied for a stay of execution to permit them to apply to the latter Court. As a result of the Court’s adverse ruling, Sacco and Vanzetti will now, it is expected, be returned immediately to the death cells whence they were removed at the eleventh hour when Governor Fuller granted the stay of execution In the meantime, with the arrival of Vanzetti's sister in New York to-day aboard the Aquitania, the police fear a renewal of the tension and outbreaks which were experienced in many parts of the United States prior to Governor Fuller’s temporary reprieve. New York will be heavily guarded henceforth until the prisoners are executed. Police are already patrolling subway and elevated railway stations anil public buildings again in New York, Boston, Washington and elsewhere, while a series of mass meetings of protest and numerous strikes are expected in many quarters.—(A. and N.Z.) “WORLD GENERAL STRIKE.” TO BE CALLED FOR MONDAY. (Received 20, 9.10 a.m.) New York, Aug. 19. At Boston, a new trial in the SaccoVanzetti case was refused by the Massachusetts Supreme Court today. Counsel for the defence are likely to appeal to the United States Supreme Court. The defence committee has issued a call for a “world general strike” on Monday.—(A, and N.Z.) BRITISH PUBLICISTS’ OPINION. “JUSTICE HAS MISCARRIED.” An overnight London cable stated that Mr. John Galsworthy, in a statement, says: “After a critical study of Professor Frankfurther’s summary of the evidence in the SaccoVanzetti trial, 1 cannot resist the convi. tion that justice was miscarried. I hope the State of Massachusetts will avoid the risk of ..making the miscarriage irrevocable.” Mr. H. G. Wells and Mr. Arnold Bennett jointly state that they hre impressed by the weight of evidence against conviction, and implore the Government and people of Massachusetts not to stain history with the blood of two innocent men.
