FINE FELLOWS
TRIBUTE TO N.Z. CRICKETERS PERFORMANCES SURPRISE MANY. (Received 19, 9.55 a.m.) London, Aug. 18. Sir Edwin Stockton, honorary treasurer of the Lancashire Cricket Club, entertained the New Zealand and Lancashire teams and leading supporters of the game at a banquet. Sir Edwin, proposing the toast .f the New Zealanders, described them as “fine fellows and splendid sportsmen.” He was delighted bv their visit; every one had done well. He welcomed them not only as cricketers but as members of the British Empire which cricket cemented. Mr. J. H. Thomas, Parliamentary Labour leader, said the team more than justified its existence and 'ts performances had surprised many. It did not matter what the financial result of the tour might be. He refused to think of success in terms of pounds, shillings and pence. Lowry responded and Haig, the Middlesex captain, proposed Sir Edwin’s health.— (A. and N.Z.)
