THE WEATHER

LAST NIGHT’S DOWNFALL. A MILD RAIN. Warm rain, which began at 8 o’clock last night in Hastings, came down steadily by eleven, developing into a tremendous downpoud, which continued until the early hours of this morirfug. So heavy was the fall that the storm water from the channels overflowed the footpaths and roads, which bore evidence this morning of the invasion made upon them. About 8 o’clock this morning the sky cleared and the rest of the day was beautifully* fine. Much surface water is still visible, but farmers express themselves as very pleased with the fall and with its mild character. The rainfall for the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. to-day was 1.55 inches. AT HAVELOCK NORTH. Heavy rain fell in Havelock North last night lasting until 7 o’clock this morning, when an exceptionally heavy downpour seemed to act as a clearup shower. The water channels were unable to take all the water which fell, causing them to overflow and run across paths and roads. The water scoured the paths out in several places and the lowlying paddocks behind the old police station were covered with surface water for a considerable distance. Mrs. Angus, of Maraetotara, reports that 2.89 in. of rain fell there between 10 o’clock last night and 8 o’clock this morning. IN NAPIER. Rain fell in Napier also last night, the downpour beginning soon after midnight and continuing until 6 o’clock this morning; .95 inches fell in that short time. A little flooding occurred at Port Ahuriri but other wise the water all got quickly away. Taradale and the surrounding district got thoroughly drenched and much water was lying about the paddocks this morning.
