SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

(Own Correspondent.) Mr. J. C. Hollyman presided over a full attendance of members at the last meeting of the School Committee. The headmaster reported an unusual slump in the attendance due to mumps. Members expressed themselves more than satisfied with the credit balance from the recent school ball.

Mr T. Cushing (secretary) was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and special mention was made of the untiring work of a bevy of ladies, who shouldered the responsibility year by year of attending to the creature comforts of the children.

Votes of sympathy were accorded the relatives of the late Mr. P. Brady and the parents of Noreen Weathered, who was last year’s dux of the school. PROGRESSIVE SOCIETY. The Clive Progressive Society was well represented at the ordinary monthly meeting, presided over by Mr. Dockery.

It was reported that the sub-com-mittee appointed by the society had conferred with the county engineer and Mr. Anderson and had agreed to a recommendation for filling in and beautifying the vacant section on the town side of the Clive bridge. Unusual activity is anticipated un the site next Saturday, when all ablebodied citizens are asked to arm themselves with a view to a vigorous onslaught on the übiquitous blackberry and other pests taking up residence there. A meeting of all irfterested in horticulture will be held in the public hall on Monday, 29th inst., when a comprehensive schedule for the forthcoming spring show will be drawn UP-

Preliminary arrangements are in hand for opening up a road to the beach and making available an excellent ground for picnic and camping parties. A very enjoyable function was held in the Public Hall on Monday evening, when occasion was taken to present Mr. “Jock” Carter with a gold wristlet watch, prior to his leaving to take over a responsible position on the staff of the Rai Valley Dairy Company, Marlborough. Mr, W. Tucker, in making the presentation, recounted the many excellent qualities of the departing guest, and wishing him every happiness and prosperity in his-new sphere of action.
