LOANS BOARD

APPLICATIONS DEALT WITH. Wellington, Aug. 17. A meeting of the Local Government Loans Board was held at the Government Buildings to-day. Applications for the sanction of 26 loans totalling £306,611) were considered. Eight loans totalling £39,1 5 6 for the relief of unemployment were sanctioned. Fourteen new loans for £52.705 and two renewal loans for £4749 were also sanctioned. Two loans for £207,500 were referred back to the local authorities concerned for reconsideration, and portions of two loans were declined, -Special attention was given to the rate of sinking funds in renewal loans, where # maturity loans had carried no sinking fund. When deciding the teim for loans for roads in country districts, due consideration is given by the board to the capacity of the rating area, so that the burden on ratepayers will not be too heavy where the estimated duration of works on which the loan money is to be expended requires that a loan shall be paid off within treasonable period.
