AN ISLAND WRECK

RESULT OF INQUIRY. MASTER’S LONG VIGIL AT WHEEL. Auckland, Aug. 15. The “ Herald's” correspondent at Suva, writing under the date August 5, says the purchases of the wreck of the auxiliary schooner Greyhound paid £225 for the ship as she lay on the reef at Naselai and £125 for the 75 tons more or less of copra, which was either in the vessel or Boating in the vicinity. Jhe engine, which cost some £2OOO a little over 12 months ago, was recovered and is as good as new. It is said that the vessel was insured for only £lOOO. At a Marine Board inquiry, the master. Captain Scott, who has been at sea for over 25 years, and who has held a master's certificate, frankly admitted that he had no right to be where he was. He said he had taken the wheel at 8 a.m. and was still unrelieved at 4 a.m. the next morning. He said he must have fallen asleep. He had six passengers on board. Owing to his frankness and candour, and to the fact that he had never had any mishap before, the board took a lenient view of the case, and his certificate was suspended for for three months.
