SPEEDOMETERS

SOME INACCURATE SCHEME FOR TESTING. H.B.A.A. DISCUSSION. “From what I have been reading lately It would appear that certain manufacturers were deliberately setting apeedometers on certain cars on a higher grade so as to make the vehicle more attractive.” commented Mr J. H. Edmundsen, president of the Hawke’s Bay Automobile Association yesterday when the question ol a speedometer test was being discussed by members of the executive of the association. The Auckland Association wrote advisiting that it had instituted a test and found it very satisfactory. The association forwarded a photograph of a notice board in connection with the matter. One member stated that his own speedometer per cent higher over a distance of 50 miles. “From what I learn it is nothing to have them 40 per cent higher.” declared the chairman, who added that such a thing was quite likely to prove a very serious matter at times. There were several speedometers which were evidently in inaccurate. “Why the traffic officers might be wrong,” he commented. The chairman suggested that, a stretch of road be set out, as done in Auckland so that every motorist could, if he wished, test out his speedometer. The association might also issue certificates detailing the accuracy of the meter at certain speeds. ‘‘l have been given to understand that the inaccuracy is multiplied as the speed accelerates,” stated Mr Edmiuidsen. who thought that the giving of certificates would be able do enable the motorist to state his speed authentically when required to do so. A member pointed out that it would be rather difficult to find a five mile stretch of road for such a test. “It is not necessary to have it chat distance ” replied the chairman, who thought it might be as well to ask the Hawke’s Bay County Council for the right to hold such a test on the Parade. “Ar* these old sign posts accurate in their instructions,” asked Mr A. E. Turner-Williams. "Well I doubt it they were all marked out by cyclometers,” replied the chairman. It was finally decided to the kppreach the County Council on the matter and if agreeable then the association take steps to bring the Scheme into operation.
