HALF A SHIP: HALF A SUBMARINE.
LATEST TYPE OF OILTANKER TO FLY N.Z. FLAG.
Half a ship and half a submarine is the appearance of the British Imperial Oil Company's new 1000ton motor oil-tanker “Paua.” which has made a successful trial trip at Southampton. It is the first vessel of the type to fly the New Zealand flag. The ship i 8 driven like a motor car, a central power unit driving all the winches through lines of shafting. Steam is employed onlv for the steering gear. The vessel was christened “Paua,” which is Maori for “Shell.' 'the company’s trademark. Sir Robert Waley Cohen, managing director of the “Shell” Transport and Trading Co.. Ltd., points out that the company’s expenditure in New Zealand and Australia totals £3,000,000. The “Paua” was built by Harland, Wolff and Co. It emhodies the latest inventions for the safe transport of motor fuel, and eclipses al] previous ships of its kind in accommodation for seafarers. The “Paua’s” first wireless message was from Sir Robert Walev Cohen who said that no country had givwn me a warmer welcome than had New Zealand, giving the company confidence in embarking on a vast enterprise. The development of roads would encourage automobilism, and ensure one of the finest tourist countries in the world.
